This may be one of the most beautiful verses in the psalm.

Notice the contrast:

Daytime. Nighttime.

There are seasons when we can see clearly.

Everything seems to make sense. We recognize God’s blessings. We can look around and see His provision.

Those are the daytime seasons.

But then there are nights.

In the night, visibility is limited. We cannot see what is ahead. Things can seem more frightening when we don’t know what is around us.

Our spiritual lives can have those same seasons.

Sometimes God’s goodness is easy to recognize.

Other times, we pray and hear silence.

Sometimes we feel surrounded by His presence.

Other times, we feel alone.

But the psalmist says something important:

God is God in both seasons.

In the daytime, His lovingkindness is upon us.

In the nighttime, He gives us a song.

The darkness doesn’t mean God has disappeared.

It simply means we cannot see as clearly.

That is where our faith becomes so important.

The psalmist doesn’t stop talking to God because he doesn’t understand what is happening. He keeps praying.

He keeps seeking.

He keeps remembering.

Jeremiah 29:13 gives us this promise:

“You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

Sometimes seeking God feels wonderful.

Sometimes it feels like wrestling.

Jacob once wrestled through the night and refused to let go without God’s blessing. The encounter left a mark on him, but it also changed him.

Our struggles may leave marks.

But God can use those very struggles to revolutionize our spiritual lives.

So if you’re in a nighttime season today, don’t assume God has abandoned you.

Keep seeking. Keep praying. Keep holding on.

The night will not last forever.

• Am I currently experiencing a “daytime” or “nighttime” season?
• How has God shown His lovingkindness to me in the past?
• What would it look like for me to continue praying even when I don’t feel God’s presence?

Prayer

God, thank You for being with me in both the day and the night. When I can see clearly, let me praise You. When I cannot see what is ahead, let me trust You. Give me a song in the night and the determination to keep seeking You until I experience the warmth of Your presence again. Amen.
