The picture Psalm 42 begins with is one of desperation.

A deer searching for water isn’t casually looking for something refreshing. In a dry and dangerous environment, water can mean survival. Everything within that animal drives it toward the place where it can find what it desperately needs.

The psalmist says, “That is how my soul longs for You, God.”

There is a difference between wanting something and desperately needing it.

We can go through much of life looking for satisfaction in other places. We look for security in our finances, significance in our accomplishments, comfort in relationships, answers in our own reasoning, and peace in circumstances that we hope will eventually change.

But those things are never meant to replace God.

The prophet Jeremiah described this problem when God said:

“They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.”
— Jeremiah 2:13

A broken cistern may look like a source of water, but it cannot satisfy our thirst.

Jesus later revealed Himself as the source of the living water our souls need. He told the Samaritan woman that whoever drinks the water He gives will never thirst in the same way again.

The question for us is simple:

What am I turning toward when my soul is thirsty?

God does not merely want to be the person we call when everything else has failed. He wants to be the fountain from which our lives continually draw.

The goal isn’t to become desperate because life is falling apart. The goal is to develop such a deep hunger for God’s presence that He becomes our first pursuit every day.

Reflect

• What do I tend to turn to when I feel empty, anxious, or discouraged?
• Have I allowed something other than God to become my source of comfort?
• What would it look like for me to seek God with the same intensity as a thirsty deer seeks water?

Prayer

Lord, give me a deeper thirst for You. Help me recognize the places where I have tried to find satisfaction apart from You. Teach me to come to You first—not merely when I am desperate, but every day. You are the fountain of living water. Satisfy my soul with Your presence. Amen.
