Day 1 — Remember What God Has Done

Scripture: Psalm 44:1–8

“We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, the deeds You did in their days, in days of old.”

Psalm 44 begins by looking backward.

Before the psalmist talks about the trouble surrounding him, he remembers what God has already done. He remembers the stories passed down from one generation to another—how God delivered His people, gave them victory, and established them in the land.

The important point is that Israel's victories were never ultimately about Israel's strength.

They had swords. They had armies. They had to fight. But they understood that the victory came from God.

The psalmist says:

“For I will not trust in my bow, nor shall my sword save me.”

That is an important distinction. Trusting God doesn't mean sitting on the sidelines and doing nothing. God's people still had to march into battle. They still had to pick up their weapons. They still had to face the enemy.

But they knew where their strength came from.

Zechariah 4:6 reminds us:

“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the LORD of hosts.

The same principle applies to us.

We work. We prepare. We make decisions. We persevere. But ultimately, our confidence cannot rest in our own ability.

And this is something worth passing on to the next generation.

Our children don't need to see parents who never struggle. They need to see parents who struggle and trust God in the middle of the struggle.

They need to see us wrestle with temptation, seek forgiveness, pray when we're afraid, and depend upon God when our own strength isn't enough.

Reflection

What victories in your life can you look back on and recognize that God was the One who carried you through?

Prayer

Lord, help me remember what You have done. When I am tempted to trust in my own strength, remind me that every good thing ultimately comes from You. Help me demonstrate genuine faith to those watching my life. Teach me to fight the battles You have given me while depending completely upon You for the victory. Amen.
